A new study on the effects of sleep indicates that women fair worse from bad sleep then men do. According to researchers men’s health was relatively unaffected by sleep quality. However, women who didn’t get a good night sleep suffered physically and mentally. Physically, poor sleep affected women’s blood insulin levels and resulted in higher levels of markers of inflammation and of fibrinogen. Mentally, the study showed that women who didn’t get a good nights rest had more symptoms of depression, hostility, and anger.

What does a woman’s sleep quality have to... more

Nine Years Later

It is nine years ago today that Sammy officially moved into our home. I wrote about this a year ago.

My husband and I discussed this on the way to church tonight. In the past year, the only thing that has really changed is that Sammy has been in three difference placements in the past year. Other than that, we’re pretty much in the same “place” we were a year ago.

Sammy’s placement is fairly “stable” at the moment. He does well in an institutional setting like... more

Why Are You Trying to Make Me Fail? My Adopted Daughter Asked

My 14-year-old adopted daughter turned to me aghast. “Why are you trying to make me fail?” she asked. “Why are you accusing me of trying to make you fail Lyn,” I asked softly. “If I had not given you the cinnamon rolls what would you have done?”

“I would have waited until nobody was looking and I would have stolen them,” she actually responded honestly.

“Well Lyn, when you take things without asking, your parents don’t trust you. I don’t like what not trusting you does to our relationship. Therefore, I want you to have all the sugar you want so you are... more

Movie Review: August Rush

I finally had the opportunity to sit down and watch the movie August Rush. I had wanted to see it ever since it came out in the theaters but prefer to just rent movies and watch them in the comfort of my own home, so I waited. The movie has a story line revolving around adoption and loss. I’m actually a little hesitant to use the word adoption because an adoption never actually occurs. The movie honestly reminds me of a modern day version of Annie. I must warn you some parts of this movie are pretty far fetched.... more

Game Answer: Contested Adoption Statistics

Categories: Education

Hopefully you participated in yesterday's game. In case you missed it, the question I asked was:

What percentage of adoptions are contested?

I also gave information to help define what contested means.

Remember that contested means that a biological parent (or other pertinent entity) attempts to legally fight the adoption based on the laws that govern their state. This could be an accusation of fraud... more

Thursday Thirteen: Where Adoption Has Stalked Me Recently

Thursday? My weeks fly by. That said, I can't get away from adoption as of late. I've been trying to keep low key on how much adoption material I willingly subject myself to as of late. I need to do this from time to time to get back to the heart of the matter, which is my daughter. It's easy to get caught up in other things. While some things present a necessity for involvement, like reform, it's easy to get side-tracked by other things.

But man! Adoption seems to follow me everywhere I go. Here are thirteen places I didn't expect to be bombarded with... more

Single male foster parents

Categories: Issues in Foster-Adopt Care

I have seen a couple of news articles saying that the need for male foster parents is on the rise and talking about the advantages of single male foster parents. I happen to agree.

I have a few friends that are single adoptive dads and they are great friends and even better dads. These men foster and adopt boys and especially teen boys, a segment of foster children that is greatly under served.

The last treatment foster home that Sammy was in had a great set up for him. There were three parents in the house, two of which were men. They were the... more

Love the Children of God – Adopt!

1 John 5:1-3 (NIV)

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.

How can we show our love for God? We can show our love for God by loving the children of God. What better way to love the children of God, then to provide a home for orphans. We can provide a home for orphans by providing temporary or permanent foster care or by adoption. There... more

Cumulative Cognitive Deficits

A note from a friend about her internationally adopted son reminded me that even when we think all things are going well emotionally, socially and behaviorally, our children adopted from less-than-desirable conditions can still have negative impacts from their early childhood.

Her son is finding it increasingly hard to keep up with his schoolwork as he heads toward middle school. And he’s becoming increasingly resistant to anything she tries to convince him to try harder. The school is reacting in a laid back fashion, and the boy is now about a year behind... more
