Coley became a birthmom in Sept 2001 when she entrusted her son, Charlie, into the arms and hearts of his adoptive family. Coley chose open adoption for Charlie as she feels open adoption is better for the child in most cases. Coley continues to be an active role in Charlie’s life, visiting through out the year and sharing in birthday and Christmas celebrations with his adoptive family, receiving pictures, and communicating via phone calls and emails.
Since Charlie’s birth, Coley has become active in the adoption community. She has co-founded BirthMom Buds with Lani D., a fellow birthmom. BirthMom Buds is a website and not for profit organization providing support to birthmothers and pregnant women considering adoption. Coley advocates open adoption whenever possible and open communication amongst birth and adoptive families.
Coley, Lani, and BirthMom Buds have been featured in All You Magazine, Adopting for Tomorrow Magazine, A Personal Touch on Adoption Book, and more. She’s conducted workshops for Let’s Talk Adoption Radio and with Lani at the 21st Annual South Carolina Counsel for Adoptable Children Conference.
Coley also runs her own adoption related greeting card business called Heartmark Designs.
Coley married her soul mate in 2003 and also parents a nine year old special needs son, Noah. In her spare time, Coley enjoys reading, writing, crafting, and spending time with her friends and family. Coley resides in South Carolina.
