Teen Threatens Mother and Brother

Posted by : Kelly in Foster Adoption Blog at 08:07 am , 404 words, 369 views
Categories: In the News!, Mental Health Issues

The following article has nothing to do with foster care or adoption, that I know of, except that I could easily see this happening in my house.

In this story out of Florida a 15 year old boy threatened his mother with a knife and hit his older brother with a stick of sugar cane after changes were made to his privileges on the home computer. His mother called the police and he was charged with aggravated assault and battery.

Oh, this scene has played out in my home in various forms and... more

Week of Confessions: Adoptive Moms Speak Up

Posted by : Jenna Hatfield in Birth-First Parent Blog at 05:00 am , 1214 words, 244 views
Categories: Society and Placement

Now it's time to jump into adoption confessions on True Mom Confessions (TMC) written by people who are touched by adoption. Today I'm going to look at ones that were written by adoptive Moms. The confessions by adoptive Moms have run the gamut on TMC. Just like birth mothers, adoptive Moms come in all shapes and sizes with different experiences, beliefs and opinions.

One of my favorite confessions was this one in which a... more

Foster and Adopted Children and Military Service

Categories: Foster-Adopt General

I would like nothing more for Sammy to be able to join the military when he turns 18. I do not want my child to go into battle, but the structure would be so good for him, in addition to my knowing that he has a place to live and is eating every day.

Foster and adopted children are not excluded from joining the military, but there are some exclusions that may prohibit our “kids” from joining.

The military has a great website that specifically lists the exclusions, or disqualifications as they are called on ... more

Why Adopt from Foster Care?

Posted by : Kelly in Foster Adoption Blog at 06:48 am , 517 words, 732 views
Categories: Foster-Adopt General

My husband and I went through a year of infertility treatments when we received the news that we’d have to spend at least another $6000, I’d have to undergo surgery, we’d have to continue the injections and every other day trips to the doctor and there would be no guarantees. That was all we needed to hear to decide we were done. Adoption was our family building option. We were not opposed to adoption to begin with, but like most families we wanted to try for a biological child.

We evaluated all methods of adoption and we chose foster care adoption. Here... more

Week of Confessions: Adoption Isn't a Joke

Posted by : Jenna Hatfield in Birth-First Parent Blog at 05:00 am , 925 words, 276 views
Categories: Society and Placement

I'll start off a look at adoption confessions on True Mom Confessions (TMC) with the lighter (but simultaneously darker) side of the coin. The jokes about "giving your kids up for adoption." I can guarantee you that these confessions did not come from birth parents. But, all the same, they bring adoption speak into a mainstream kind of blog and/or website and, as such, comments like these need discussed.

There are some different kinds of adoption-in-passing jokes that have made their way to TMC. There are some... more

No Unmarried Foster Parents in Arkansas

Posted by : Kelly in Foster Adoption Blog at 02:45 pm , 510 words, 502 views
Categories: Legislation

Arkansas will be voting on a referendum to ban unmarried couples from becoming foster or adoptive parents. This will be one of the issues they vote on along with the presidential election in November.

In order for the issue to make it to the ballet proponents had to gather at least 61,974 signatures. They submitted more than 85,000. In 2006 the Arkansas Supreme Court overturned a decision that specifically banned gay or lesbian couples from becoming foster parents. It seems the bickering is continuing and now it will be up to the voters to decide.

Sex Offender Gets a Just Sentence

Posted by : Kelly in Foster Adoption Blog at 10:23 am , 405 words, 393 views
Categories: In the News!, Sexual Abuse

In a prior blog I talked about separating my private life and business life. For the most part I can do it, but there are still stories that get to me. The following is one of them.

Warning: Graphic and repulsive information and descriptions.

Last week Patrick "Booger Red" Kelly received a life sentence for his actions in child sexual abuse. What he did is heinous and his sentence is justified if not actually light.

He “taught” five children, now ages... more

A Week of Confessions!

Posted by : Jenna Hatfield in Birth-First Parent Blog at 05:00 am , 365 words, 157 views
Categories: Society and Placement, For Bloggers and Readers

I wrote a post earlier in the month about an adoption themed confession on the site True Mom Confessions. I was so intrigued by that post that I've decided to do a week of posts about adoption related confessions on the site. There are, surprisingly or not, a lot of confessions about adoption on True Mom Confessions.

And why is that?

What's the point of the site anyway? From their about... more

MySpace Aids in Reunion

Posted by : Coley S. in Adoption News Blog at 09:34 pm , 333 words, 699 views
Categories: 2008

I came across an article recently about a man who found his birth parents via MySpace. It’s kind of interesting that MySpace has become more than just a social networking website. It’s such a large and widely used website that it makes sense that you could potentially locate birthparents or adoptees. This is not the first MySpace reunion that I have heard about, just the first article about one. In the article we... more

Teachers who Enable

Posted by : Kelly in Foster Adoption Blog at 02:22 pm , 560 words, 275 views

If school hasn’t started for you yet, it will be soon. You may be looking forward to having your child in school all day, or you may be dreading the start of the school year because of the fights at and with the school.

In most cases, the younger the child, the more enabling the teacher can be. Many teachers don’t want a child to “fail” while they’re young. There is fear it will damage a child’s self esteem. In my experience and opinion, it is much more damaging to a child to fail in high school than in first grade.

I have talked to many parents... more
